Surprise, Surprise

28 Sep

So that last post probably wasn’t the best one to keep you hanging on for the past 10 days but I really didn’t have much else that I wanted to write about and I refuse to moan constantly in each and every post here! I got back on Monday from a surprise trip to Lossiemouth for my dad’s 60th birthday. The break (especially from the interwebs) did me good and I’m back to my usual cheery self!

My mum had asked if he would drive her and my neice up on the Friday to meet some of the members from her GAP group for a weekend trip as a treat for the grandparents and kids. As soon as he left his house (which he shares with my uncle) my sister and I snuck in, packed him a bag of bits and bobs while my mum stalled then got about a half hour head start on them. It took us just under 2 hours and when we got there we decorated the inside of the caravan with banners and balloons and streamers.

About half an hour later I got a call from my mum to say that they were here (dad thought she was calling one of the girls) and they soon tracked down the right caravan letting my niece in first to hide with us. We heard my mum send my dad in with the suitcases and we pounced. He was completely clueless, laughed out loud and then exclaimed “but I don’t even have any clothes with me” when we told him we were all there for the whole weekend. Then my uncle snuck up on him from behind for an added surprise!

We were quite lucky with the weekend that we chose as it was an Open Weekend at Silver Sands in Lossiemouth with lots of activities. There was a small funfair, inflatables for the kids, a craft fair, carboot, race night and bottle bingo over the four days/three nights we were there. The first day we got our bearings and had a wander round the caravan park including the beach and the caves I remembered so well from when I was a kid.

In the evening we went to the funfair where my niece, my sister and I had the longest, fastest, spinniest waltzer ride ever (I actually felt sick!) and laughed a the bargain one go for 30p or three for £1 sign at the arcade! Of course the adults wanted to go for a drink (or 10) so we headed to the bar. I’m not much of a drinker and was more than happy to head back at the same time as my mum and niece and snuggle into bed. Unfortunately, due to the size of the caravan, I had to share a bed not only with my niece but also my mum so to say it was a squeeze was an understatement. I was seriously thankful to get home and sleep in a double bed all to myself!

The weekend itself seemed to slip by in a lovely relaxed haze. We built sandcastles on the beach, net fishing in rockpools (we even found a starfish!), took a walk up to the lighthouse where we found apples and berry’s growing in the wild. I ate far too much, did some more of my secret cross-stitch project and managed to watch both Doctor Who and the Singapore Grand Prix. On the Sunday afternoon my niece and I filled a holiday time capsule (more on this tomorrow) and we buried it on the beach before releasing the remaining balloons to the wind and the North Sea. It was really lovely just watching them float away on the tide I’m not sure why.

We were up and out by 10am on the Monday morning but not before one last trip to the beach to build another castle. I think it’s safe to say that this was the best sand castle I’ve ever built prior to 9am :P

Negative Nancy

17 Sep

Usually I consider myself to be a chilled out positive person but over the last few days I’ve been finding myself getting would up by the smallest of things. It’s no secret that I don’t enjoy my job but it seems to have gone from tolerable to unbearable overnight. I’m finding it hard to plaster the smile on my face and be helpful when it feels like I’m working twice as hard as anyone else as well as tidying up their messes! It’s getting extremely frustrating and I’m not sure how much longer I can cope. Although that said I don’t have another full week at work between now and mid October!

I am back to being constantly tired all the time which sucks not to mention the fact that I’m having time of the month issues despite going back on depo a few months ago (best contraceptive ever by the way) after the go ahead from my GP and lots of (minor) tummy issues. If you haven’t looked up the symptoms of Crohn’s yet, enjoy! And of course the one symptom I would relish in right now (weight-loss) is nowhere to be seen.

I’ve had a messed up relationship with food since I was 14 and my best friend  at school went to our guidance teacher as she thought I was anorexic. Was I? I don’t know but I certainly wasn’t healthy. I’ve yo-yo dieted for years never being happy with the way I looked, hoping I could lose just a few more pounds. I’m no longer ‘overweight’ and for a while I actually quite liked what I saw in the mirror. I have a goal weight as part of my 101 list. 10lbs below what my body considers to be its ‘happy’ weight and I want to do my best to get there but (and maybe it’s going back to when I was trying to recover) I find my physical actions counteracting my brain. I think “Ok, I’m going to watch what I eat for a while” and half an hour later I’m eating cheesecake and pizza.

Speaking of self-sabotage – I had the chance to complete a goal today and I turned it down. It was the Belmont Bike Festival in town today (Hadn’t heard about it before – Aberdeen usually sucks for activities and is completely dull and grey!) and as well as some cool bikes of all shapes and sizes there was also a climbing wall that my niece had a go on. She wanted me to have a turn too and despite the guy saying that it was OK I didn’t do it. Why? Why would I do that? Last night I got to see a fantastic show called “I am what I am”. It has members of Aberdeen Disability Consortium, who have all overcome daunting challenges, showcasing their talents onstage and boy were they talented! It brought a tear to my eye and made me realise that there are always people out there that have it worse than you. So why was I still feeling so negative today? It doesn’t make sense, it’s not like me and it’s winding me the frak up!

(I was in two minds about whether or not to even publish this post but y’know what? If you can’t handle me at my worst you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best ;) )

Freebie Five

13 Sep

You all know about the “freebie” list right? As made famous by the Friends episode: ‘The One with Frank Jr.’ Where you and your partner both list five celebrities that you can have your wicked way with should the opportunity arise and the other person can’t get mad? Well it came up in conversation recently…

Now maybe it’s just the hopeless romantic in me but I don’t really understand this (aside from the fact that it’s fun and most likely never going to happen!) and I wonder if anyone has actually taken the golden opportunity and how they and their partner felt/coped afterwards. Can sex ever be just that in a monogamous relationship? Do you think you could really go through with it even with your partners ‘blessing’? On the flip side, life is for living and taking chances. If you want something badly enough just go for it. Doesn’t ask definitely doesn’t get. And if your significant other doesn’t agree/understand maybe you weren’t right for each other after all? Then there’s the age and seriousness of the relationship. Would it be more or less acceptable if you were in a long-term situation rather than short-term?

Musings aside, I thought I’d join in the fun and compile my freebie list. Apparently I’m a strange breed of female who is actually more interested than who the person is on the inside rather than how hot they are to look at so this was actually really hard for me! The conversation took place on Wednesday and I have only just finalised this list two minutes ago (in fact I probably just went and made a change 10 seconds before hitting publish!)

Nathan Fillion

How can you not love this man? Sexy, funny, an amazing actor and a complete and utter geek.

 Sebastian Vettel

I fell in love with Vettel during his 2008 F1 season and my crush has continued ever since.

Ian Somerhalder

Good boys finish last. I’d take badboy Damon over ”Mr Nice” Stefan any day of the week!

Ryan Kwanten

Forget vampires Bill and Eric. It’s Jason whose clothes I hope come off each episode.

 David Tennant

Well, does it really need any explanation?!

Bonus Girl Crush
Anna Paquin

It’s no secret that I find women extremely fun to look at but my girl crush Kaley Cuoco has definitely been replaced with Anna, this woman is just perfect in every single way. Sorry Kaley!

What about you? Who’s on your Freebie Five list?

NEOS 2011

12 Sep

I mentioned NEOS in my Good Things post yesterday and meant to blog about it over the weekend (but got REALLY carried away with my new project and didn’t have time!)

The North East Open Studios (NEOS) is Scotland’s Largest Open Studios event! An award-winning, not for profit collective of artists, makers and galleries in the North East of Scotland who open their doors to the public yearly. Founded in 2003 – NEOS has gone from strength to strength making it Scotland’s largest open studios. There are over 250 displays in and around the North East of Scotland this year showcasing creative works ranging from photography to painting and sculptures to jewellery.

I attended the launch party for Re-collective at I Heart Art; “a collection of new works from recent graduates of Grays School of Art who have continued working and developing their creative language. Now based all around Scotland, the artists have reunited to exhibit their current studio practice involving explorations in painting, drawing, film, photography and collage. Re-collective promises to be a diverse and exciting show.” Diverse it certainly was and if I had even the slightest amount of talent that these guys do I’d be over the moon!

NEOS 2011 is running right now and through next weekend closing on the 18th September 2011. If you’re in the area be sure to check it out. Details of all other collections can be found on the NEOS website.

Another shocking increase this month despite my shenanigans! Which I am more than delighted with. I said in my last NET worth update the Collectormania Glasgow might be my last con of the year but somehow I am now attending TWO in October as welll as a trip to Glasgow mid-month to see Rihanna at the SECC so I am highly skeptical of a further increase for the next 2 months. Especially seeing as how David Tennat has just been announced for EMS!! I get to meet him again! Excited much?! So yeah; hotels, flights, tickets, photoshoots and autographs are soon going to add up but y’know what? You only live once so screw it!

I do however need to make my money work harder my regular saver only earned me 27p over the course of the year in interest because I missed one payment – sucks but thems the rules and its my own fault. So this weekend, no ifs, buts or maybes I will be sorting out things financially once and for all. Wish me luck, I think I’ll need it!

#16. Detox for a whole weekend

6 Sep

Technically this wasn’t a ‘weekend’ detox but it did last 48 hours so it totally counts. Yesterday I finally had my appointment for my x-ray that I’d been waiting for since November last year (remember this post?) and seeing as how I pretty much had to fast for a whole day I decided to go the whole hog and try a fruit and veg detox for the full 48 hours.

Naturally I spent most of Saturday stuffing my face with all those forbidden goodies like Gregg’s sausage rolls and lots of chocolate but come midnight I was on a strictly liquid diet until after the procedure. Another downside was that I also wasn’t allowed dairy as it’s difficult to digest and this of course meant that I wasn’t allowed tea after mid morning! I slept in until almost 10:30am which meant there was only time for one cuppa :( I then had to drink some horrible white stuff that would help ensure that my bowels were as clean as possible (the less said about that the better!)

Come 5pm I was absolutely starving having subsisted on water and fruit juice for the past 17 hours and I treated myself to some miso soup from Yo!Sushi (taking care not to swallow any of the veggies) which did help stop my tummy grumbling for a short while. Watching David Tennant wearing leather in Fright Night was also a great distraction for a couple of hours and then I figured that the best thing to do was have an early night.

I woke up after an almost 9-hour sleep and was surprisingly NOT hungry. I guess being anxious will fill up your tummy just as much as food does. I was early to my appointment but was seen early and instead of being the 3-4 hours as suggested in the leaflet I was in and out in an hour and a half. This left me with the rest of the day to myself. The hospital suggested that I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables as well as softer foods which worked out perfect for me. BUT it was extremely hard to resist the temptation to just stuff my face with everything in sight. In the end I settled for a cup of lentil soup from TGFS on the way home and spent the rest of the afternoon finishing up the various cartons of fruit juice littering my fridge as well as practically killing my kettle with the amount of tea I drank!

I had planned on popping to the shop for some fruit but couldn’t be bothered then after my dance class I found that I just wasn’t hungry which really does go to show that your body gets used to you feeding it regularly rather than you actually needing nourishment. With just 30 minutes left of the day I decided to call it a night instead of waiting up and possibly eating junk type food just because I could.

Being a girl I of course weighed myself throughout. On Saturday I was 143lbs, Sunday 142, Monday 141.6 and finally Tuesday140.8 meaning a 2.2lbs loss over 3 days. Not a huge amount but enough to get me kick started back into eating better and exercising more. I’ve put on 10lbs since mid-March – not a huge amount but enough to start to show and make me feel uncomfortable in my skin again so it’s back on the healthy bandwagon for me. It’s nice to see me closer to the sub 10 stone mark, its definately my body’s happy weight even if it isn’t mine! I got so close to my goal back in March at 132lbs I don’t know what made me lose motivation but nevermind. I’ve stocked up on Sit Tight firming lotion (currently on 3 for 2 at Boots) which I plan on using religiously and reviewing for you all in a couple of months. I also think it’s time I completed the Couch to 5k challenge in its entirity once and for all. A few trips in October may set me back a little bit but I’m confident I can complete it this time and I can get my wobbly ass back into a fitter state!

Collectormania Glasgow 2011

5 Sep

Collectormania Glasgow holds a special place in my heart as it was my first ever convention back in 2009. This year was also a first for me as there was no particular guest/s that I was excited about meeting (where were the Trek guests Showmasters?!) I mean the line up was pretty great as far as Glasgow goes (despite a few last-minute cancellations) but not for the shows and movies that I am obsessed with! As I mentioned in a previous post my Babydoll outfit got another outing on the Saturday while Matt went for a slightly different look from his usual and did the paint spattered outfit that David Tennant wore in his role as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing. To say he got some confused looks is a slight under exaggeration! Even people who know Matt well had difficulty recognising him. I was impressed by the two people who got the reference but even more so by some of the suggestions as to who he could have come as “Superman the Decorating Years” was my personal favourite.

A few laps round the (much smaller than usual!) arena and we decided to fuel ourselves with tea for the long day ahead getting some strange looks on the way (Braehead Arena is actually located right in the middle of the Braehead shopping centre!) The other unusual thing about Collectormania Glasgow is that there is a free signer included in the price of your ticket. This years free guest was Ruari Mears who has played various monsters in the new Doctor Who series and also The Sarah Jane Adventures. He was a lovely person to meet taking time to chat and stop to pose for photos with pretty much everyone. That is definitely one of the perks of Glasgow, it is such a smaller show attendee-wise that you get the chance to chat without holding up anyone else in line (there is very rarely a queue of over 10 people for any guest.)

And that was really it for the Saturday, the rest of the day was spent meandering along, stopping for the occasional photo and a chat and gawping at the lovely goodies for sale from the dealers stands which for once I could buy with the only consequence being the reduction in my bank balance. A LOT of people (including about 90% of the guests) asked Matt what his outfit was from and luckily he was prepared with a photo of Mr Tennant on stage on his mobile. I also had the pleasure of meeting Holly McGuire and Kyla Cole (a girl could get a complex around such gorgeous ladies) who both greeted Matt by his name despite the change in outfit.

I believe that there was a party in one of the clubs in Glasgow city centre that evening but to be honest, I was completely wiped. Being a crap girl my feel were sore after a day in heels and I knew I had another day of it on the Sunday so we chilled in the hotel room watching the new Doctor Who and then ventured out for the pizza that I had a been craving since lunchtime.

*****

On to the Sunday which had been dubbed the day for talks. Matt was back in his usual Ten get up and I had my gorgeous (if I do say so myself) Rose dress on. Despite it being early there were still a few people milling about and it was an experience to watch the doubletakes and hear the whispers of “Is that David Tennant?” as Matt walked past. Once inside we did a quick check of the talk schedule and proceeded as we had the day before with our wanderings.

My feet were extremely thankful when it was time to take a seat in the talk area(two days in heels almost killed me!) First up was Michael Winslow of Police Academy fame in what I can only describe as the most bizarre but funny talk I have ever been to. He seemed to only be capable of answering people’s questions with sound effects, had various props to assist him and at one point chased a woman who was leaving the talk early into the main arena. What those outside the talk area must have thought I dread to think.

On directly afterwards was the lovely Robert Maschio of Scrubs fame who it seemed to spend the whole event hi-fiving everyone. He’d spent the previous evening working on some new ‘material’ for our pleasure and while it was extremely entertaining I would have been covering up my seven year-old nieces ears had she been there. What made Robert’s appearance extra special was that he turned up in his scrubs (showing off his sexy guns perfectly!)

It was then time for more tea and I finally got the chance to meet Brett a long time Twitter buddy who I’d managed to coerce into coming along and re-embracing his geeky side! I lost count of the number of times Matt was stopped and asked to have his picture taken but (and don’t let him know this!) I loved every second of it. Watching a kids face light up with excitement at seeing his favourite doctor and squeaking a thank you as they walked away with a huge grin on their face is quite an experience. One or two people clearly recognised my outfit as being from an episode and asked that I be in the photo as well which was nice but I was more than happy to take the backseat (again, don’t tell him I said that :P )

Finally we headed to see John Levene’s talk. Having never seen any classic Doctor Who I knew nothing of him or his character but I had been advised my multiple people that his talk would be worth going to. Mr Levene is a wonderful man, there is no other word to describe him. He is a great public speaker and wonderful with his fans. He answered questions and then treated us to a reading that he had done at Nicholas Courtney’s memorial service about how we all just need to slow down and take time out for those that we love. He loved David Tennant as the doctor and commented on Matt’s look mid sentance before progressing to the story of how he got to meet him. Later when we went to meet him for Matt to get his autograph he gave us some interesting advise on public speaking and love as well as insisting that we take at least two pictures each.

A few more laps of the arena (and one or two geeky purchases) later! It was almost time for the show to close and Matt wanted to say goodbye to the models. He was much more recognisable as The Doctor and Holly wanted a photo with the two of us. I think the phrase ‘a little worse for wear’ is just about accurate and they slipped off not long after to the little girls room. We hung around for a bit but with TooTall walking towards us it was most definitely time to leave. And that, as they say, was that. Well… not quite…

Ever the gentleman Matt decided to see if he could help locate Holly and Kyla on behalf of their photographer as they had a flight to catch and using his male intuition somehow managed to find them at a nearby bar. Before I knew it I was watching a video of Kyla on her phone with Holly while she told me how pretty I was and Matt bought the girls another drink (as if they hadn’t had enough!) as they giggled away. Matt ever the opportunist could hardly believe his luck when Kyla not only asked to wear ‘the’ coat but also for a kiss. There is photographic evidence but for that you’ll have to head on over and Like his Facebook page!

P.S. Almost forgot, the rest of the pictures from the weekend can be found here.

Cosplay Fever – 50′s Rose Tyler (Idiot’s Lantern Version)

3 Sep

Last weekend I was at yet another convention, this time a little closer to home at Collectormania Glasgow. I was super excited as this meant not having to stress about suitcase size and weight issues like I do with the London shows. Which meant I got the chance to not only wear my Babydoll outfit again but also meant I could debut my newest cosplay. I really have got the fever and I love it.

This time I went for Rose Tyler’s costume from Doctor Who episode The Idiot’s Lantern. The moment I watched the episode I fell in love with the outfit (and the shoes! Everyone adores those shoes!) and it was Lisa who managed to talk me into going for it. Because Rose is, well a real person (as opposed to alien or fantasy character like Babydoll) this was more about sourcing the correct accessories as it was the outfit itself.

The dress was whipped together with the help of my sisters mum (I bought a pink 50′s skirt and a sequin boob tube from eBay and had her sew the two together) and was padded out with not one but two underskirts. The jacket on the other hand was a complete PITA to source. I was lucky enough to find the exact same jacket that Billie Piper wears in the episode but in a different colour (white) figuring that it would be easy enough to dye (it really wasn’t!) In the end I ended up buying what I’ve dubbed “the back-up” jacket (which I’ve actually rather fallen in love with ironically) I plan on using this cosplay again so am still hunting for the right one – I thought (once again) that I’d found it but when it arrived it was black and not grey! Args…

The hair. Not something I had to buy but I spent hours upon hours trying to figure out how the hell to make my thin, straggly hair look elegant in a beehive style. In the end it took three lengths of hair extension, two hair baubles, a bumpit, about a dozen kirby grips and a load of hairspray. The method actually came to me while sitting in the cinema watching (the super boring) Cowboys & Aliens the weekend before and thankfully all came together on the day.

All my purty accessories. I don’t have my ears pierced so finding a good match for the earrings was an even bigger pain than if I had. The ring is actually sparkly and nothing like the one she wears but it was pretty! Sunglasses were bought from Peacocks (and featured in one of my good things posts as they were on SALE!!), the clip on flower from my local Poundland and the shoes the best bargain of the lot from a local charity shop for the princely sum of £4.00! My final “accessory” came in the shape of Tenth Doctor Extraordinaire Matt ;) The end result? Well take a look for youself:

I’m now of course already working on my next cosplay (or should I say six!) which will hopefully be worn at the Entertainment Media Show at the start of October.
