#61. Upload a YouTube video

29 Feb

A huge draw at the SFX Weekender (especially for the males) was the Area 51 dance troup who provided the entertainment. A group of scantily clad girls strutting their stuff… what’s not to like? On the Friday evening Matt and I gave the Blastermind quiz a miss (who holds a quiz for three bloody hours?! I don’t have a long enough attention span for that!) and went to see the Imaginarium show instead. I was a wonderful mix of the freaky, spectacular and downright gross but I was mesmerised by the girls on stage. I thoroughly enjoy dancing but I’m not a natural dancer by any stretch of the imagination. I have to work hard to get each and every step I learn and if I’m not repeating it again and again the moves soon leave my mind and my body. I was in awe by what they could do, the fact they were semi-naked was just a bonus.

Anyway, I took several videos – research y’know and planned to upload them to YouTube but when a seventeen second video took over 36 hours to upload and the second errored out just as it hit 95% I’ve given up after this one. There’s also a short video of Matt failing at juggling (he blamed the dancing girls but really he was just rubbish ;) )

I don’t know what I was doing wrong if anything but I’d really like to get those other clips uploaded and maybe even use my channel http://youtube.com/leanneeef for something like vlogs who knows! So if anyone has any tips please let me know!

SFX Weekender 3

29 Feb

After a crazy amazing week it was finally time for the real reason we were in Wales – the SFX Weekender. This was a 2 day event where everything was held on site at a holiday camp (this year Pontins at Prestatyn) which was run by the people behind SFX Magazine. I’d won four tickets via a Cineworld competition and you’d think with such a great team behind it you’d get a really well organised event but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. In fact it was one of the worst events I’ve been to (including expo) for organisation. That’s not to say that I didn’t have a good time, some things were really great but for me, the negatives outweighed the bad.

Luckily we arrived at a perfect time to check in as there was no queue and we headed straight to our chalet/apartment thing. To start with the accommodation was really poor. For a holiday camp that was marketing to people they’d recently been upgraded, the standard of our “gold” chalet was not good. I’m now so very glad that we were forced to upgrade to this from “silver” as by the sounds of it those were not great and didn’t even have a shower! There were twin beds in the bedroom and a leather sofa bed (which was the nicest piece of furniture in the place!) all of which were very uncomfortable (I would know, I think I took a turn of sleeping in them all!) and not suitable for a couple (where exactly are mum and dad supposed to sleep on the family holiday?!).

Anyway, one good thing about the event was that everything was in the same building so you didn’t have to leave one area to go to the next and it meant the majority of the weekend I had no idea what kind of weather was going on outside. This did have the bizarre knock on effect of having the signing area in the cafe and people having to walk through the main stage to get to pretty much any other part of the building but this wasn’t a huge issue. The dealers area was pretty small and I didn’t find anything to tempt me to go over my alloted budget (the fear of being over my weight limit like I was close to on the way down also helped this!)

The event began with an opening ceremony which included the introduction of the Area 51 Dance Troup (which turned out to be one of the best parts of the weekend bizarrely enough) who were there to entertain us for the duration and a sneak peek at those who helped put together the weekend. After this there really wasn’t a lot to do…

The schedule itself seemed to be pretty well thought out and except for the minor weirdness of the standard signing pass holders slot being before the VIP for one of the autograph sessions could have worked well. What they weren’t prepared for was guests getting delayed due to trains and others having to cancel completely at the last-minute. This unfortunately was not communicated well with items on the board scribbled out and arrows pointing to where slots had been moved to. I believe there was also announcements made from the main stage as well but you had to be in the right place at the right time to hear them and even by the end of Saturday there was still nowhere I could find that confirmed that Anthony Stewart Head was no longer attending.

The quiz which I was really looking forward to attending when I first heard about it was billed to be 3 hours long which in my opinion was just WAY to long to hold my attention so instead we decided to head to the Imaginarium show which was full of weird and wonderful acts including a contortionist, a female magician and of course more half-naked dancing-girls. (It’s a good thing I find women hot as the “entertainment” was most definitely focused on the male geeks in attendance!)

It was then time for the Friday night party when the legendary Pat Sharp took to the decks. I had a few drinks (probably more than I should have but not enough to get drink) did a little dancing and then decided to call it a night until we heard that the gorgeous Eve Myles was in the screening room and very drunk! (As we discovered the next day she was being served pints of wine!)

Thankfully the show doesn’t really start very early as I had one of the worst nights sleep of my life on the Friday and headed to the Eve Myles talk that was starting at 11am with a bit of a grump on. Eve makes everything better though as she is such a lovely, lovely woman. (I’ve since had a dream where she told a con friend that she thought I was scary and to please keep me away from her at all future events but I really hope that this is not the case!!) She told us about Barrowman’s little Barrowman, the pints of wine she was being served, how much she loves working on Torchwood and her upcoming role in Zach Braff’s new play All New People and just genuinely put a smile on my face.

It didn’t last long however as pretty much the rest of the Saturday was spent queuing for autographs. I’d bought a signing pass for £20 which means you can get one autograph from each guest attending at no additional cost but you do have to queue for them. Both Hollie’s from Red Dwarf were there and thankfully there was just the one queue for the two of them. Brian Blessed seemed to have three seperate queues and it took some people around 4 hours(!) to actually obtain their autograph so I decided to avoid that headache! But I couldn’t resist the chance to speak to Eve again which was fab.

I was excited about the True Blood screening before I realised that I’d already seen the episodes in question and I’d been introduced to Shaun of the Dead at new year by Matt and Liz so we had another fairly empty early evening ahead of us. We went for dinner with some of Matt’s friends who run the Corsham Sci-Fi Event which lasted a little longer than we expected and so missed the SFX Sci-Fi Awards and Cosplay Competition but it was worth it for the lovely food and company (the food choice in Pontins was horrendous and that is all I will say on the matter) In the end we still made it to the screening room in time to catch the singalong screening of the Buffy episode “Once more with feeling” (despite getting back to the room to find out we had no electricity left in the meter!)

Then it was time to head back to change for the masquerade ball where Craig Charles would be our DJ of choice. Unfortunately Craig was late due to the train situation I believe and the party never really got into full swing for me. We decided fairly early on to call it a night and try to get some sleep as I was supposed to be flying home the next day (I never did in the end as my flight got cancelled). I did like the fact that this event was on a Friday/Saturday as it meant you had the Sunday to recover/travel and you could be back at work on the Monday morning but I would only do this event again if they got some seriously amazing guest that I just HAD to meet. I think it’s more an event for people who like to get drunk and party rather than people who are interested in meeting guests and hearing talks. If I did SFX again, I’d also stay in the nearby Beach Hotel which when I looked it up had comparable prices to what we paid for the chalet.

#44. Go to 5 different museums – Beaumaris Castle

28 Feb

As I may or may not have pointed out before I freaking love castles and when looking on the Snowdonia Mountain Lodge website where Matt and I stayed during our Wales adventure I came across this gorgeous picture and the both of us decided that we MUST go there.

Thanks to the power of Twitter (seriously don’t know what I would do without you guys sometimes!) we discovered that it was Beaumaris Castle on the Isle of Anglesy and about a 30 minute drive from where we were staying. Not making it to the top of Snowdon had its advantages as it meant that we could squeeze in a trip to ”our” castle.

This castle is huge and in fact was never finished (us Scottish folks demanded some attention or something and work was halted on it) a cinema has been built inside one of the larger rooms for you to watch videos relating to the building (unfortunately we didn’t have time to sit through these). I think the entrance and the mini dock were my favourite parts of the whole thing especially as some of the water was frozen.

#Operation Penny – Take Two

27 Feb

So I’ve decided to restart Operation Penny again – this time (almost) literally. In just under 26 weeks I’ll be boarding a plane bound for New York before heading to Atlanta for the biggest con of my life: Dragon*con. Since I started cosplaying I’ve really wanted to put together a cheesecake factory uniform like the one Penny wears in The Big Bang Theory and this would be the perfect event for it. Plus its lightweight for transporting across the pond as well!

However the bad part of this plan is that despite getting to within 5lbs of my goal weight I’ve put back on all those pounds and more in the last few months and am now at a shocking 160.6lbs. I’m so disappointed in myself and I feel really ashamed of that number but rather than mope about it I’m just jumping in and getting back on the bandwagon. It’s gonna be tough and there will be bumps on the way but I’m confident I can hit my goal weight by the time I step on that plane.

I’m also setting another mini target of 145lbs by my birthday (May 12th, 10 weeks away) so I don’t get discouraged along the way. I’ve already started drinking more water (well diluting juice), tracking my calorie intake, taking my vitamins and following a 2 week exercise plan from a magazine so I’m hoping I can drop a few pounds in water weight this week before the hard work starts. I’m also contemplating calorie cycling to shake things up and keep my body guessing… anyway, wish me luck!

Snow, Sheep and Leg Mouse

26 Feb

After the excitement of spending the day in London and the fear of not getting home (the last train of the night was cancelled and instead a rail replacement service was offered meaning we had to get one train then a bus then another train but the information wasn’t very clear and we had no phone battery left and it made my tummy go all fluttery!) the last thing we wanted was an early start but with our Wales adventure imminent that’s exactly what we got. First stop on the tour was Cardiff, a mere four and a half hour drive across the country(!) and with Kate’s (Matt’s satnav) help we made it there not long after it got dark. (I was far too excited about paying to go over the bridge to get into the country!)

Once we settled into the Ibis (which was quite nice for the tiny price of £30 a night) we headed to Cardiff Bay to seek out some food and Ianto’s shrine. It was freezing!! Not even just a little bit chilly but actually freezing. It was still lovely to see the docks, the millennium centre and the Roald Dahl Plass which was beautifully lit up at night. We ended up eating at Eddie’s Diner which appears in the season 6 episode of Doctor Who “The Impossible Astronaut” (yes, we’re geeks but you knew that already right!?)

The next day saw more exploring as we headed to Southerndown Beach where the tenth doctor said goodbye to Rose. unfortunately the tide was in and the cold meant that the rocks were slippy (yes, I fell – what of it :P ) but it was exceptionally beautiful. On the way there we spotted a little ruin of a castle and decided to go back for a peek before heading on our way. It was a classic example of how not to build a castle being so close to the river that it got flooded and the layout being practically impossible to figure out but it was lovely all the same.

We had a quick stop for tea and scones then headed North towards Snowdonia where we would be spending the next two nights. Rather than stick to the motorways we made the decision to instead venture through the Brecon Beacons and boy were we glad we did when we were presented with snow and some of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen!

It was dark when we found our accommodation for the night so I was in awe when we woke up to this view outside our window (in case you’re looking for somewhere to stay in the area I cannot recommend Snowdonia Mountain Lodge enough):

That day was the day we had our biggest challenge in front of us. We decided to climb Mount Snowdon but unfortunately despite being sunny it was in the minus temperatures and Kate was not in a very helpful mood. Firstly she took is to THE most difficult of the paths up Snowdon, y’know the ones that recommend crampons and ice axes?! then when we asked her to take us to the mountain railway station she took us to some other hill just across the road from where we were actually meant to be before we eventually found our way to the non-existent Victoria Terrace which leads up the Llanberis path (the easiest yet longest way up the mountain). I’ll be honest, I thought I was going to die after the first 20 minutes as the walk up the hill here to the little cafe/rest stop that is near the start of the trail is the hardest part of the whole thing! It is very, very steep and I was roasting about 10 minutes in. Thankfully once you actually hit the path the gradient isn’t anywhere near as bad and therefore my complaining reduced accordingly. We were rewarded by some truly amazing views though.

Unfortunately due to the cold weather the path became icy at parts and after encountering this lovely sheet of ice we decided to call it quits after we reached the halfway house (which is apparently being converted in to a cafe but was derelict when we got there) But not before we took some pictures to mark out achievement!

The walk down was just as difficult as going up with it bein difficult to keep a good pace and even footing. I managed to fall which to be fair for this only to have happened once the entire time is quite a miracle. We stopped at the Pen-y-Ceunant Tea House on the way down and discovered much to our dismay that we could actually have parked there and saved a whole lot of grumbling on my part as this would have missed out most of the steep part at the beginning.

We had a lovely chat with the owner Steffan as we sat near the fire with our tea although I’m now disappointed that I didn’t try what is dubbed “a devilishly good hot chocolate”. At least we’ll know all this for next time and there definitely will be a next time though hopefully with a lot less ice! (I’ve even added climb the three peaks to my bucket list!)

Because we were finished for the day earlier than anticipated we were even able to squeeze in a quick trip to the another castle (more on this in my next post!) before winding down for the evening with a curry from the Indian, a glass of wine, a snuggle and a movie (OK so I was so exhausted that I fell asleep but its the thought that counts!)

Ohmigod You Guys!

18 Feb

Having already seen Wicked when I visited the big smoke on my own back in 2010 and Much Ado About Nothing in the summer last year I was really excited when Matt suggested we go see a show on the Monday night. I don’t think the people of London (or in fact those within a couple hours train journey for that matter) realise just how lucky they are to have such an array of live entertainment at their fingertips. We tried to get tickets to see Wicked again (even though I asked him to not let me since I felt it was a waste seeing a show I’d already seen!) but we were out of luck so instead we opted for Legally Blonde at the Savoy Theatre (and I didn’t even have to twist his arm!)

The West End cast included Carley Stenson, Natalie Casey, Ben Freeman and (to our surprise) Peter Davison and they were all fantastic. I’ll admit I’ve never been to the theatre and not enjoyed it (well…maybe once to see a university production of a Gilbert and Sullivan production *yawn*) but this was really awesome. Exceptionally cheesy, remaining fairly faithful to the storyline of the movie and with a whole lot of pink it was a great evening! The show only has a few more weeks in the West End so I urge to you go see it if you can! Alternatively there’s also the touring cast making their way round the country so if it comes to your city and you’re not sure whether or not you should see it – you should! It’s even coming to Aberdeen so I’ll be booking tickets for my niece and I to go see it as soon as I can afford it!

#44. Go to 5 different museums – Natural History Museum

10 Feb

I almost feel like it’s cheating to mark this off on the list as we only managed around a quarter of the fascinating delights that the Natural History Museum holds but it does say Go To… not See Everything there is to see… so, what can I say about the London NHM. Um… wowzers just about covers it!! Even from the outside this place is super impressive. It’s hard to comprehend just how much they have jammed inside this stunning building.

When you first enter through the Cromwell Road entrance (the main one) you are greeted by the wonderful Dippy, a 26 meter long cast replica of a real Diplodocus skeleton (which I have just discovered while googling shares the same birthday as me after being unveiled on the 12th May 1905! Obviously I’m not quite THAT old), and an overwhelming sense of where to start. There are four zones: blue, green, red and orange as well as other temporary exhibition areas.

Wanting to see the T-Rex we of course opted to start with the blue zone where all the dinosaur artefacts were stored. It was a great mix of fossils, hands on activities and animatronics which would make this the perfect place to take school-age children (in fact there was more than one school trip in progress when we were there for which I declared my jealousy at the culture London children are exposed to at such a young age.) We then continued through the blue zone to see the stuffed mammals which was extremely fascinating if not a little bit creepy at the same time. (I was introduced to a creature that looks like a very large rat that appears to walk on two long and thin legs and which Matt and I have affectionately named Leg Mouse forever more.) It was interesting to note as well the that the museum no longer collects new specimens for this particular collection.

Leg Mouse

I was also excited to find that the museum has pencils and paper on hand so that you can draw things as and when inspiration strikes. I took five minutes out to compose this amazingly accurate drawing of a dodo:

The viewing area above the main mammal gallery goes all the way around the room allowing you to see the life-size blue whale model from above as well as below – I actually couldn’t believe that there was a room big enough to house not only that but also another 100 or so animals. My favourite thing was probably the school of dolphins they had hanging from the roof although I was disappointed to see a lack of pink ones!

At this point we paused for a cup of tea and planned what to do in our last hour or two.  We thought we had covered the majority of the blue area but we were very wrong indeed! Matt wanted to see the Creepy Crawlies (yeah I don’t get it either!) whilst I was intrigued by the are on the map marked The Vault thankfully they were close enough together that we could do them both before we had to vacate the premises. The Vault is in the upper part of the museum and the main staircase was just as impressive as the rest of the place complete with a statue of Darwin halfway up! The Vault was… well… a vault! This was where all the precious items were kept including the latrobe nugget, a Mars meteorite and my personal favourite, The Aurora Pyramid of Hope. A collection of 295 naturally coloured diamonds some of which even glow in the dark!

Diamonds are a girls best friend

With not long to spare I grudgingly left the room with the pretty gems to go and look at bugs… no really. After that amazing display I was treated to a visit to No 1 Crawley House. All joking aside it was just as fascinating as the rest of the museum just with the added “benefit” of my skin crawling most of the time!! (Especially when we were inside Crawley House and they had a fake wasp’s byke (I’m allergic to wasp stings!) Unsurprisingly I don’t have many pictures from this area so here’s a pretty one of a caterpillar and a butterfly.

And then, alas, it was time to leave but not before making my donation to the renovations of the Central Hall by making Dippy roar!

If you’re in London I cannot recommend this museum enough but do make sure that you set aside plenty of time and I’m pretty sure its possible to get lost in there for a week and still not see all of it! I’d say we did around a quarter of it in the time that we were there so at least two full days are required. I can’t wait to go back an explore the red and orange zones!

Increase\Decrease on January = -£1,594.24

Once again this is not an accurate reflection of my NET worth as of 1st February but rather right now. This is because idiot that I am was convinced that I had lost (or had stolen) my wallet. Somehow after travelling over 2000 miles (plenty of posts to come about my adventures!) I was unable to go from the shopping centre to my flat just 300 feet away. I was gutted as it I had only just put my driver’s licence back in my wallet that morning after being away AND I had almost £40 in cash when I am usually the queen of not carrying any money around with me at all. Rage.

Anyway, as it turns out I did make it home with it after all as I JUST found it this very evening. After searching high and low on the Tuesday night before calling to cancel all my cards, getting enraged at the cost of a replacement Cineworld Unlimited card (ten quid for a piece of plastic!!) and mourning the loss of the business cards for Matt and my friend Karen, I discovered it safe and sound. Underneath my pillows. On the opposite side of the bed from where I usually sleep… I have no clue whatsoever how it got there I am just seriously happy to have it back again!

So there’s my excuse and quite a good one if I do say so myself! I also have an excuse for the rather shocking dip in NET worth this month.. I forgot to factor in interest when calculating my mortgage balance each month so with my January statement coming through I’ve had to amend this in one fell swoop rather than gradually. Rookie mistake if I do say so myself but I think I’ll keep calculating as I have been doing and just take the hit in my mental number on a yearly basis.

As for my excuse as to why I still haven’t set up a budget… well I don’t have one. I think I’ve made enough excuses for now and instead will get to work with writing some nice posts about my fabulous trip!

#25. Watch 101 movies

6 Feb

So I’ve been MIA for a while again but this time I have an excuse, I am just home from the most wonderful and amazing week adventuring in Wales with Matt and I didn’t even think about this blog even once! A truly well earned rest that was much needed. This also means that I have lots of new exciting stuff to blog about so keep your eyes peeled for some posts in the near future!

Just before I went away I settled down to watch my 101st movie since starting the 101 challenge. I settled for The Notebook seeing as I was in a sufficiently slushy mood to actually sit and watch it all the way through. It is a heartbreaking tale but one that is done so beautifully that you really get caught up in it even though you kind of know how its going to turn out in the end. Strangely enough I didn’t cry though. I used to cry at all sorts even if I really didn’t want to but now it takes a lot more for me to start leaking than it used to. If you haven’t seen it and you like a good romance I highly recommend it.

The other 100 movies I’ve seen over the last 18 months are listed below. I think I’ll keep up the list for a while even if just to keep track of those I’ve seen with my Unlimited Card.
